How Universal Credit works when you’re self-employed
You tell Universal Credit you’re self-employed and go to a self-employment interview with your work coach. If they decide you’re gainfully self-employed (it’s your main work, it’s organised, and you expect to make a profit), you can get a start-up period of up to 12 months.
During it, Universal Credit is based on your actual monthly profit, and you don’t have to look for other work. Your payment goes down by 55p for every £1 you earn above any work allowance.
The minimum income floor, in plain English
From month 13, Universal Credit usually assumes you earn at least the minimum income floor: 35 hours a week at the National Living Wage (£12.71 an hour, aged 21+), after tax and National Insurance. That’s about £1,699 a month. If your profit is lower, your payment is worked out as if you earned that.
That’s why the first 12 months matter. Use them to build towards that figure, and the floor stops being a cliff.
Not ready for the start-up period yet? You can stay on ordinary Universal Credit, look for work and build alongside it. Compare ordinary Universal Credit and the start-up period.

Who it doesn’t apply to
The minimum income floor generally doesn’t apply if you have limited capability for work, you’re a carer, or you’re the lead carer of a young child. If a 9-to-5 isn’t possible for you, working for yourself, around your health or your family, can be. Untick the box in the calculator to see your figures without the floor.
Questions
Can I be self-employed and claim Universal Credit?+
Yes. You report your self-employment, go to a self-employment interview, and report your profit each month. If your work coach decides you are gainfully self-employed, you may get a start-up period of up to 12 months.
What is the start-up period?+
Up to 12 months where Universal Credit is worked out on what you actually earn, with no requirement to look for other work. You meet your work coach about every 3 months to show what you are doing to grow the business. It is usually once in a lifetime.
What is the minimum income floor?+
After the start-up period, Universal Credit assumes you earn at least what someone on the National Living Wage would for the hours you are expected to work, usually 35 a week, after tax and National Insurance. For someone aged 21 or over that is about £1,699 a month from April 2026. If you earn less, your payment is worked out as if you earned that.
Who does the minimum income floor not apply to?+
It generally does not apply if you have limited capability for work, are a carer, or are the lead carer of a young child. Your work coach confirms this.
Is this calculator my official entitlement?+
No. It is an estimate using GOV.UK rates. Your Universal Credit statement and your work coach have the real figures.
