New Jersey has a Self-Employment Assistance law, but we found no active program in 2026. Ask the unemployment agency before you rely on it.

How self-employment affects your benefit

No NJ page spells out how running a side business affects benefits. You must report all earnings each week, and you are only partially unemployed if you work no more than 80% of normal hours. Corporate officers and owners of more than 5% are not considered unemployed on wages from their own corporation.

If you earn 20% or less of your weekly benefit rate you keep the full benefit; above that, gross wages are subtracted from a 'partial benefit rate' of 120% of your weekly benefit rate, and you can never be paid more than your weekly benefit rate. You must not work more than 80% of normal hours.

Your weekly job search

You must contact at least 1 different employer each week by phone, mail, internet or in person and be able to prove it. Keep a work search record (the Division provides a log template), because proof can be requested at any time during the claim.

Other help in New Jersey

• New Jersey Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services (DVRS): DVRS runs a Self-Employment Service in which VR counselors and business consultants help you write a business plan. Once the plan is approved, DVRS may give up to $10,000 toward start-up costs (per the NJ Division of Disability Services page).
• Medicaid: New Jersey expanded Medicaid, so the new work requirement applies to expansion adults: 80 hours or $580 net a month, and hours on your business count. Planned start: 1 January 2027.
• SBA Microloans of up to $50,000, and free advice from your local SBDC and SCORE mentors.
• On SSI or SSDI: PASS and the SSDI trial work period let you test a business.
