New York runs Self-Employment Assistance: you keep your weekly unemployment benefit while you start a business full time, with no work search. Needs 13+ weeks left and a profiling score of 50+. Written acceptance before you start. ## How self-employment affects your benefit For the weekly 'days worked' question, 'work' includes any self-employment or freelance activity, even if unpaid, and it is counted through the hours-based partial system. Earnings from self-employment are excluded from the 'more than the maximum benefit rate' earnings cutoff. Business owners and principals who work for the business regularly are generally not considered totally unemployed. The benefit is based on hours, not earnings: 0-10 hours keeps 100% of your weekly benefit, 11-16 hours 75%, 17-21 hours 50%, 22-30 hours 25%, and 31+ hours nothing. Nothing is paid in any week you earn more than the maximum benefit rate (currently $869) in gross pay, not counting self-employment earnings.
