Ask the unemployment agency before you rely on it. ## How self-employment affects your benefit No NJ page spells out how running a side business affects benefits. You must report all earnings each week, and you are only partially unemployed if you work no more than 80% of normal hours. Corporate officers and owners of more than 5% are not considered unemployed on wages from their own corporation. If you earn 20% or less of your weekly benefit rate you keep the full benefit; above that, gross wages are subtracted from a 'partial benefit rate' of 120% of your weekly benefit rate, and you can never be paid more than your weekly benefit rate.
