Compare them](https://pontia.xyz/universal-credit-vs-start-up-period/) ## The key facts - Up to 35 hours a week of job search in your claimant commitment; agreed business-plan hours count as work preparation and come off it - Report any earnings from your project every month; Universal Credit goes down 55p for each £1 over your work allowance, if you have one - No minimum income floor while you are not gainfully self-employed - Only apply for jobs you would take: refusing an offer is a 91-day sanction ## What you must do to keep getting it Job search required ### Job search Until a work coach decides you are gainfully self-employed, your claimant commitment applies: usually up to 35 hours a week of job search, for jobs within 90 minutes’ travel. Keep a record; DWP accepts your own written log, copies of applications and journal entries. **Your business work can count.** Ask your work coach to agree hours on your business plan as “work preparation”. Agreed hours come off the 35 (for example 5 hours on the plan, 30 on job search). ### What you must do to keep getting it - Go to your self-employment Gateway Interview with evidence: business details, records, invoices or receipts, website or social media, business plan. Missing it can stop your Universal Credit. - Report your self-employed income and expenses at the end of every assessment period, even if it’s nothing. You aren’t paid until you do. - The decision can’t be backdated: until it’s made, the normal job-search rules apply. - Register for Self Assessment with HMRC by 5 October after the tax year you started. HMRC’s £1,000 trading allowance does NOT apply to Universal Credit: report everything. ### If you earn money Any money you earn is reported, and Universal Credit goes down 55p for each £1 over your work allowance. You only get a work allowance (£427 a month, or £710 without help with housing) if you have a child or limited capability for work; otherwise the 55p starts from the first £1. Business earnings are reported every month as money in minus business costs actually paid. Until you’re found gainfully self-employed there is no minimum income floor: what you really earn is what counts. **If you take or turn down a job:** Refusing a job offer, or not applying for a job your work coach tells you to, is a higher-level sanction: 91 days of standard allowance (182 for a repeat).
